Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a fourth term as president of Brazil after defeating Flávio Bolsonaro in the final vote. The far-right candidate has refused to acknowledge the result and has filed a legal petition to annul the election.

Flávio Bolsonaro cited a decision by a supreme court justice to extend voting hours as the primary reason for his challenge. This move mirrors the strategy his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, employed four years ago. Jair Bolsonaro also refused to concede his defeat to Lula before attempting a coup and later being convicted for it.

The election marked a major comeback for Lula, who has been in the political spotlight for five decades. Tom Phillips, reporting from São Paulo, described the victory as the crescendo of an incredible political career. Phillips noted that Lula was the first elected working-class leader in Brazil and has helped millions of people escape poverty.

Phillips assessed that the legal challenge from the Bolsonaro camp is unlikely to change the outcome. He stated that world leaders are already recognizing Lula’s win. Phillips argued that Bolsonaro does not have a strong chance of overturning the result despite his formal objection.

The result cements Lula’s hold on the presidency after a dramatic fightback. The incumbent had trailed in earlier polls but closed the gap in the final stages of the campaign. His victory over Flávio Bolsonaro serves as a rebuke to the far-right movement that has gained traction in Brazil in recent years.

The legal petition filed by Flávio Bolsonaro asks the courts to cancel the result based on procedural grounds. The extension of voting hours was a key point of contention in the days leading up to the vote. The supreme court justice made that ruling to allow more citizens to cast their ballots before the polls closed.

The next steps in the process will involve the court reviewing the annulment request. Until a ruling is issued, Lula remains the declared winner of the presidential election. The outcome of the lawsuit could determine whether the new term begins on schedule or faces a delay.
