Ukraine’s capital came under renewed missile fire on the night of October 26 and into the early hours of October 27, resulting in damage to educational infrastructure in Kyiv.

Minister of Education and Science Andrii Butenko confirmed that five students and employees of the State University of Trade and Economics were injured in the attack. He stated that early reports of fatalities were not confirmed, and no students or employees died. The ministry is currently in contact with the university’s management to provide assistance while the institution assesses the extent of the damage.

Vice-Chancellor Anatolii Mazaraki explained that some individuals were inside shelters during the strike, while those injured were outdoors. Specifically, two sophomore students were wounded near student accommodation buildings. Both sustained severe injuries, and one is awaiting surgery. The university’s student council has launched a fundraiser for Roman Balla and Anna Voloshyna, the two injured students.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russian forces launched 16 ballistic missiles over the course of the night. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that one person was killed and 15 others were injured across the affected areas. In addition to the university, the Ivan Piddubny Olympic College was damaged, though officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports said children present were in shelters and unharmed.

Butenko described the targeting of educational institutions as a repeated pattern, noting that the enemy directs missiles at children, teachers, and scientists without pity. He urged all participants in the educational process to proceed immediately to shelters whenever an air-raid warning is issued. Students and teachers are currently helping to clear debris and manage the aftermath at the university campus.

The attack adds to a series of strikes on Kyiv that have targeted both residential and institutional buildings. The university continues to evaluate structural damage to its academic facilities and campus territory in the wake of the overnight bombardment.
