A Baltimore County judge ordered an Uber Eats driver held without bail Monday afternoon.

Abubakarr Barrie, 23, appeared in Wabash District Court on charges tied to the kidnapping and stabbing of a 15-year-old girl. He did not speak at the hearing. His public defender told the judge Barrie maintains his innocence.

The incident took place Thursday at a rental house in the 3700 block of Garrison Boulevard, near Barrington Road in northwest Baltimore. Charging documents obtained by WJZ Investigates state that Barrie picked up the teen while driving an unlicensed taxi. She had ordered a ride to a takeout restaurant. Police said Barrie "turned violent immediately" and took her to his basement apartment, where he told her to put down her phone and stop screaming. Court papers say he then began stabbing her across her body, and she scratched and struck him in response. The victim hit Barrie with a fire extinguisher before running out of the apartment without clothes or shoes, her body covered in blood, police said.

She reached the 3800 block of Belle Avenue, about 10 minutes away, where a bystander let her use a phone to call 911 and her mother. Police tracked Barrie through the teen's phone, which he still had, and through a Cash App number he gave her to pay for the ride. That led investigators to Barrie and the white Hyundai Elantra he drove.

Barrie had lived on Garrison Boulevard for one month, WJZ investigator Mike Hellgren learned at the hearing. His public defender said Barrie worked for Uber Eats and was studying for his GED. Court officials said Barrie has a criminal record but no prior convictions. Probation services reported a history of suicide attempts, and his lawyer asked that he be monitored while in custody.

The victim suffered at least five stab wounds and a collapsed lung. Officials said she is expected to survive. Barrie faces nine counts, including first-degree attempted murder, which carries the possibility of life in prison if he is convicted.

Shana Kay, who lives across from the apartment, told WJZ she had never seen Barrie before. "I would have helped her. How scary. She must have been terrified," Kay said. "My daughter likes to take taxis, but now I'm afraid."

Police said Barrie remains in custody.
