A $38 million renovation project stands at the center of Baltimore's recent selection for National Geographic's Best of the World 2027 list. The magazine announced the designation on October 20, placing the city among 24 destinations across six continents. The list specifically cites the city's upcoming railroad bicentennial as a primary reason for the inclusion.
The National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation is undergoing a major transformation to align with the historic milestone. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was chartered in 1827, marking the start of the 200-year period that will culminate in 2027. The museum's expansion includes a restored 33,000-square-foot building scheduled to open in early 2027.
Visitors to the expanded facility will have access to the museum's distinctive 22-sided roundhouse and its collection of historic locomotives. The project is designed to link the nation's railroad past with modern transportation innovations. This effort coincides with broader investments in cultural attractions and waterfront redevelopment throughout the region.
National Geographic's travel guide also recommends other sites for 2027 visitors. The Baltimore Blueway offers kayaking routes that connect recreational activities with historic landmarks along the Chesapeake Bay waterfront. Fort McHenry remains a key destination, preserving the location where the 1814 defense inspired the poem behind the national anthem.
The city joins international destinations such as Melbourne, Jaipur, and Normandy on the list. The recognition highlights Baltimore's focus on American history, local seafood, and outdoor experiences. Travelers can review the full list of recommendations in the annual guide as they plan their trips.
