A Johns Hopkins student says the room she calls home measures 14 by 12 feet, and she has stopped noticing how small it is. Writing in The Johns Hopkins News-Letter on Oct. 28, she describes a space she can cross from bed to dresser without standing, and she says a room does not need to be big to hold what matters to her.

The account begins at the end of a day. She describes an everything shower, a home cooked dinner and a cold poppi poured over ice before she enters the room. String lights run across the 14x12 foot wall and glow a warm gold, and she writes that the light is the first thing that greets her. She then settles into a warm chair with a heat pack to work beneath that glow.

The walls carry the rest. NASA posters of stars and nebulae hang beside Van Gogh's swirling night sky. A mandala tapestry stretches across another section of wall, and ivy trails along the edges of her window. Dreamcatchers hang above her bed, and a Persian rug runner covers the floor. She writes that she traces the tapestry's swirls and details from bed and still finds something new after months of looking at it.

Her dresser holds bangles tangled in gold, silver, pink, green, amber and blue, earrings from India, skincare bottles arranged in the order she uses them, perfumes and makeup in an organizer. The third drawer will hardly open, she says, and she can find anything on top with her eyes closed. The mirror above it faces her each morning and each night.

Beside the dresser sits what she calls a News-Letter shrine: writing, clippings and ideas she does not want to lose. A flower shaped lantern glows on her desk next to photographs of her family, along with quotes she copied by hand and sketches and doodles made in the margins of class readings. Her bed is a full, piled with pillows and stuffed animals, nearly all gifts from friends or family, and she remembers who gave her each one and when. She closes by noting the room's size: a shoebox she can reach across from bed to dresser.
