Formula 1 returned to the United States this weekend for the race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The event marks a shift from a venue previously threatened by low attendance to one now considered among the most popular destinations for dedicated fans.

COTA differs from the Miami and Las Vegas Grand Prix, which utilize temporary street circuits. The Austin facility is a permanent track designed by motorcycle racer Kevin Schwanz. Herman Tilke’s company handled only the buildings and infrastructure. The layout features varied corner speeds, challenging turn sequences, heavy braking zones, and elevation changes, with run-off areas replacing concrete walls.

The site has undergone substantial physical changes since the first United States Grand Prix in 2012. Grassy banks that formerly bordered the track are now occupied by hospitality structures. A cable car connects one structure to the paddock building. The complex includes two swimming pools.

The surrounding skyline has also changed. Rollercoasters and amusement rides now fringe the venue. These additions are part of a diversification strategy that positions COTA as a theme park, concert venue, and racing circuit. The facility also hosts the Lone Star Le Mans races for the World Endurance Championship and IMSA in September.

The venue serves as a testing ground for various automotive and technological components. Pirelli designs tires there, and tech partners help teams manage data and strategies. The site has hosted numerous high-performance vehicles, including an Audi TT-S and a Corvette ZR1, for evaluation purposes.

The current event is the second of three F1 races held in the United States this year. The Austin Grand Prix attracts a demographic that differs from the street circuit races in Miami and Las Vegas. The permanent infrastructure allows for a different spectator experience compared to the temporary barriers and limited run-off found on city streets.
